ऋग्वेद 1.25.8

वेद मासो धृतव्रतो द्वादश प्रजावतः। वेदा य उपजायते॥8॥

देवता —        वरुणः;       छन्द        निचृद्गायत्री ;       स्वर        षड्जः;      
ऋषि         शुनःशेप आजीगर्तिः 

मन्त्रार्थ — महर्षि दयानन्द सरस्वती
(यः) जो (धृतव्रतः) सत्य नियम विद्या और बल को धारण करनेवाला विद्वान् मनुष्य(प्रजावतः) जिन में नानाप्रकार के संसारी पदार्थ उत्पन्न होते हैं (द्वादश) बारह (मासः)महीनों और जोकि (उपजायते) उनमें अधिक मास अर्थात् तेरहवां महीना उत्पन्न होताहै उसको (वेद) जानता है वह काल के सब अवयवों को जानकर उपकार करनेवालाहोता है॥8॥

भावार्थ — महर्षि दयानन्द सरस्वती
जैसे परमेश्वर सर्वज्ञ होने से सब लोक वा काल की व्यवस्था को जानता है, वैसे मनुष्यों को सब लोक तथा काल के महिमा की व्यवस्था को जानकर इसका एक क्षण भी व्यर्थ नहीं खोना चाहिये॥8॥

8. He, who accepang the rites (dedicated to him) knows the twelve months and their productions and that which is supplementarily engendered.
Veda ya upajayate, who knows that is upa, additionally or subordinately, produced. The expression is obscure, but, in connection with the preceding, Veda maso dvadasa, who knows the twelve months, we cannot doubt the correctness of the Scholiast’s conclusion, that the thirteenth, the supplementary or intercalary month of the Hindu unisolar year, is alluded to; that thirteenth or additional month which is produced of itself, in connection with the year, yah trayodaso adhikamasa upajayate samvatsarasamipe svayam evotpadyate. The passage is important, as indicating the concurrent use of the lunar and solar years at this period, and the method of adjusting the one to the other.
